片語動詞通常由動詞和副詞、介詞,或兩者組合而成,例如 look up、look after、put up with。有些意思可以從字面猜到,有些則需要整體記憶。下表挑選日常對話、校園和職場常見的 72 個用法;中文解釋是常見語境,不代表每個片語只有一種意思。

可分開和不可分開:代名詞位置

一些片語動詞可以把受詞放在動詞與副詞之間,也可以放在後面:turn off the light/turn the light off。如果受詞是代名詞,通常要放中間:turn it off,不說 turn off it。但有些搭配不能拆開,例如 look after the child、look after her;不能把代名詞放在 after 後面。遇到不熟悉的片語,先查例句確認它是否可分開。
