英文冠詞 a、an、the：先看可數與已知程度
英文名詞前的冠詞常讓中文學習者猶豫。選 a/an、the，或不加冠詞時，可以依序問：名詞是可數還是不可數？如果是單數可數名詞，是否需要限定詞？說話者和聽者是否知道指的是哪一個？
先記住這三個判斷點

單數可數名詞通常不能裸用。 英文不能只說 I bought book；需要說 I bought a book、I bought the book，或 I bought this book。冠詞之外，my、your、this、each 等限定詞也能放在名詞前。
a 和 an：看開頭發音，不只看字母
a/an 都用於單數可數名詞的非特定用法。選哪個看下一個詞開頭的聲音：以子音音素起頭用 a，以母音音素起頭用 an。

若形容詞放在名詞前，a/an 要看緊接在冠詞後面的形容詞發音：an interesting book、a useful tool。
the：所指對象已知或被限定
the 不等同中文單字「那個」；它表示聽者能辨認說的是哪一個。常見情況包括前文已提過、語境中只有一個、後面描述限定了範圍。
- 前文提過：I bought a bag. The bag is blue.（我買了一個袋子。那個袋子是藍色的。）
- 有明確限定：Please close the window near the door.（請把門旁邊那扇窗關上。）
- 雙方都知道的對象：The teacher is waiting outside.（那位老師在外面等。）
- 常見獨一對象：the sun, the moon。但若在比較或分類中使用，還是要看句子意思。
- 形容詞最高級常搭配 the：She is the tallest person in our group.（她是我們組裡最高的人。）
零冠詞：泛指複數或不可數名詞
談論一整類事物時，複數可數名詞和不可數名詞常不加冠詞：
- Cats usually sleep a lot.（貓通常睡很多。）
- Water is important for life.（水對生命很重要。）
- He speaks English.（他會說英文。）
- We had breakfast at seven.（我們七點吃早餐。）
若名詞變成特定的，就可能改用 the：The water in this bottle tastes strange.（這瓶水喝起來味道怪怪的。）The breakfast we had yesterday was excellent.（我們昨天吃的那頓早餐很棒。）
同一個名詞，冠詞改變指法
a doctor / the doctor / doctors
- My sister is a doctor. 我姊姊是一位醫生。（職業身分，泛指其中一類。）
- The doctor called me. 那位醫生打電話給我。（雙方知道是哪位。）
- Doctors need clear records. 醫生需要清楚的紀錄。（泛指醫生這一類人。）
a coffee / coffee
coffee 通常是不可數名詞：I drink coffee in the morning.（我早上喝咖啡。）在咖啡店點一杯時，口語可以把 a coffee 當作 a cup of coffee 的省略：Can I have a coffee? 這是情境中的可數用法，不表示 coffee 在所有句子裡都變成可數名詞。

冠詞有固定搭配和例外，尤其是地名、機構名、樂器和抽象名詞。遇到不確定的片語，記下完整句子並查例句；不要只用中文的「一個／那個」逐字套換。
